Sara Donovan’s Top Ten Things to Take on a Stakeout

Sara Donovan here. Conducting surveillance of possible perps is an important part of an investigation. This is not to be confused with observing the idiosyncrasies and the comings and goings of neighbors. That is just good security. The keys to any successful stakeout are: 1) finding an unobtrusive location to park the car that provides a good visual field of the target’s location; 2) be prepared for long, boring hours of no activity; and 3) take precautions to keep from being made. In this regard, I have put together my list of the top ten things I take on a stakeout to ensure its success, even if the target never shows (that’s why I have #8). 😉 . . .

4.) What can we expect in upcoming installments of this series?

You’re going to see a lot more of Zoe (and her hair’s ever-changing colored streaks), the continued growth of Sara’s inner belief (and where her “intuition” takes her), and definitely more of Mauzzy. There might even be a sister in Mauzzy’s future. 😉 I’ve been saving up book ideas for decades, so at this point I can almost close my eyes and pull a sheaf of paper out of my bursting filing cabinet for a new Sara and Mauzzy Adventure. ROTC boys might be replaced with Naval Academy midshipmen; stolen antiquities with possible heists and suspicious deaths; and Marty the Mall Cop with Serg the Air Marshal. And I have some ideas to allow for Mrs. Majelski to make an appearance or two. Have I said too much?

Something Fishy Is Going On

This post is at the request of several of my followers, who have asked for themed recipes related to my book, Against My Better Judgment. Since there are three meals referenced in the story, I have provided below the recipe for my family’s favorite that also happens to make an appearance in Chapter 40. However, first a little background. . .

I nonchalantly edged my body around, fighting off multiple tendrils of fabric clutching and grabbing at my head and shoulders. I popped my head out of the blouses, and after clearing disheveled hair from my eyes, was confronted with the no-nonsense visage of—a mall cop. On a motorized two-wheeled scooter.

From within my inner sanctum of the clothes rack, I laid on him all the cool innocence and southern sweetness I could muster. “No, but thank you for asking. Everything is okay, officer.”

"This is one of the quirkiest groups of characters I have read in a long time! . . . So if you're into quirky characters and Egyptian history, this is a book you may want to check out!"

As we moseyed down the sidewalk, I cocked an eye over my shoulder at the empty parking space where the mystery car sat just two minutes ago. Even for Sketchville, there was something about it…

Mauzzy was doing his usual refusal-to-pee routine when I noticed the cottage to the immediate right of mine had the lights on. A guy moved in the front room, but I couldn’t quite tell what he was doing. He must have moved in earlier in the day.

Saturday - According to Sara

It is said that one can learn a lot about someone by what’s in their grocery cart. I thought I would give a little introduction to Sara Donovan, the main character of Against My Better Judgment, by helping her prep for a Saturday of errands. Below is a Saturday – According to Sara. . .

Harlie's Books - Review

"Sara is just a great character. She has her flaws, in which some are hilarious and quirky but nonetheless, I loved her spunkiness. . . . I honestly can’t say that I’ve read a humorous, romantic comedy/mystery like this one before. I’m glad that I did . . ."

Wait. The bus?

I was back in the moment, my rumination of recent events a fading memory. I fired up all four cylinders and sped past the evil beast. Tearing into the parking lot, I caught sight of my Nemesis in the rearview mirror. It was approaching fast, black smoke shrouding it like an executioner’s hood.

I threw the hatchback into a primo space right next to the stop, the front tires smacking up the low concrete barrier before rocking back. In that instant, the bus hurled a fiendish guffaw at me, once again heralding my impending defeat.

howisyourbook - Review

"Read this suspenseful story with totally relatable characters and of course an awesome pet named MAUZZY . . ."

"And it will not be my last I absolutely love this little cozy mystery. It was the type of book one can finish in one sitting. The author is a wonderful storyteller I loved his narration. . . . I will say I highly recommend this book, and encourage you guys to order it, and read it!"

Against My Better Judgment
(Mauzzy and Me Mystery, #1)
By B.T. Polcari
New Adult Contemporary Mystery, Romantic Comedy
Paperback & ebook, 298 Pages
September 16th 2020 by The Wild Rose Press

When freshman year at the University of Alabama draws to a close, Sara Donovan finds herself grappling with the same old question—listen to her head or follow her heart. What she ends up doing is purchasing an Egyptian souvenir funerary mask, and after a mysterious phone call, she's certain a ring of antiquities smugglers are operating in Tuscaloosa.

With finals never far from her mind and her return to 'Bama hanging in the balance, she should be studying. Instead she launches her own investigation to prove her mask is indeed a stolen artifact, and not a cheap trinket. When it comes time to snoop, Sara is more than ready, or at least she was until a hot new teaching assistant moves in next door.

Suddenly she learns things are never as they seem. Ever.

About the Author

Ever wonder what retired business executives do after they have put in years of effort for society and decide it is time to hang up their hat? Perhaps strolling along the country club’s fairway, or lounging on a 50-foot yacht?

Alas, B. T. Polcari is unlike your typical retired executive. Empty nester and Scarlett Knights alum, Polcari is still learning the meaning of “retired” while feverishly typing away on the next new book idea, smashing the fuzz off the little green tennis ball, or blasting bowling pins for a perfect game. Yes there is a boat, but not one that comes with its own crew; this retiree prefers to bustle along a serene lake in a quaint single seat Sunfish sailboat.

Perhaps the only time BTP can be found in a quiet moment is while enjoying the morning company of two family dachshunds over a newspaper and cup of coffee. B. T. Polcari currently resides in Chattanooga, TN and is thrilled to be fulfilling a childhood dream of becoming a published author.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I really hope that readers will be touched by the fact that there is a greater Love at work in our earthly romances, and that relationships aren’t separated by death, as proven in my novel by the relationship between Savannah and Deirdre Rose.

There’s a lovely quote from St. John of Chrysostom: Those whom we love and lose are no longer where they were before. They are now wherever we are. I will feel satisfied if even one reader is comforted by this after reading this novel.

(With its own giveaway.)

"The lessons are numerous in this poignant, inspiring, and beautiful story – celebrate the life that is given, long or short; also that no matter what happens, the love remains. . . . Fans of the author or those who enjoy this genre will probably enjoy this. This has some elements of magical realism to it."

Rockin' Book Reviews - Review & Guest Post

"Dragonflies at Night is a novel of relationships past and present. It is story of loyal friends, destinies, fulfilling dreams, appreciating life's beauty and true love. This is a captivating, inspiring and uplifting tale."

Where the Magic Happens

Welcome to my writing space! When we built our home in 1995, this room was my stepson’s bedroom. When he moved out ten years later, we converted it into a guest room. But now we have two other guest rooms in our home, so this year … abracadabra! It is now my very own writing space. . .

A Celebrity Love Story

I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of “celebrity,” from my very first crush in the 60’s on Bobby Sherman, to my current favorite—Josh Groban.

One time, in my thirties, I was waiting for someone at Logan Airport in Boston when I caught sight of Michael J. Fox being escorted through the terminal by his entourage. I was a fan, of course (those were the days of Family Ties and Back to the Future.) I was thrilled to see him right there a few feet away from me, but it surprised me that so many people were screaming his name and trying to touch him. That seemed totally bizarre to me, and I felt a good deal of sympathy for him. In my eyes, he was “just a guy” walking through an airport, and it woke me up to a certain awareness of how celebrities are almost revered by the public, to the point of sometimes losing their true identities. . .

"It's a very sweet story. I can definitely relate to Savannah. She is strong and sweet and just so real. Ben seems like someone who would be happy with simple if he could just write and perform his music. The struggles of keeping a relationship despite the distance is real. They both are scared of giving their heart or losing each other.

I really loved this book. I couldn't put it down. It was such a sweet and beautifully written romance!"

“They look so happy, don’t they?” Savannah said from the doorway, her best friend Andi at her side.

They were sipping the last of the rainbow drinks, which reflected the bright light from the candles on all of the tables. One more Life Celebration part, this time a bridal shower, nearly over. Tam, the bride-to-be, was still opening presents, squealing with delight at this and that, the piles of torn paper and ribbons growing larger by the second. Her fiancé, Eric, had just come in and was sitting on the floor beside her, oohing and ahhing appropriately every time a new gift appeared. They were both glowing with the love of family and friends that surrounded them, and their love for one another was beautifully apparent.

E-Romance News - Excerpt

Savannah gulped as she read the title. “Dragonfly Lady?” She turned to face him, her right hand over her heart. “You wrote a song about me . . . and the dragonflies?”

He was worried for a moment that he’d gone too far. Avery had not liked it when he’d written personal songs about her. Shoot, she’d never allowed him to write songs like that about her. Well, okay, he’d written intimate songs about their relationship, but he had never actually performed or recorded them. “I did indeed,” he quipped a bit nervously. “Is that all right?”

"The key themes of this book are loss, love and family. . . . This is my first book by Anne Marie Bennett and she did a great job at having the reader understand that celebrating life in the now is what really matters and that above all things love always remains."

When they got back to the house, Ben worked out and took a shower, then spent some time in his music room, playing around with a new song. It was still in the very early stages, but he had a good beginning:

Tell me your heartaches and I’ll tell you mine

going back in time and how it all came to hurt so bad

Let's Hear It for the Aunts

Savannah, the romantic heroine of Dragonflies at Night, has a very special relationship with her mother's sister Suzanna (aka Auntie Zan) who took her in when Savannah’s parents died. Later in the novel, there’s a sweet scene where Kline, a good friend of our hero Ben, introduces Savannah to his little girl, Carly. She has always called our hero “Uncle Ben,” and assumes that she should call his new girlfriend “Aunt Savannah.” Thus begins another very special auntie relationship with a very special niece who isn’t a blood relative.

Hallie Reads - Excerpt

Savannah raised her bottle to his. “And here’s to Avery.” They clinked glasses again. “Because when Avery let you go, it made room for me.”

“Amen,” Ben said, taking another deep swallow of beer. “Here’s to our exes who made us who we are today.”

“To our exes,” Savannah echoed.

Kimber Li - Guest Post

Love on Location

Ben and Savannah, the romantic leads in Dragonflies at Night: More Than a Love Story, fall in love on one side of the United States (Massachusetts), and deepen their love on the other side (California). Sometimes the settings that I create in my fiction are totally imaginary, but in this novel, I have actually been everywhere that our lovers find themselves!

“That’s . . . I mean . . . That’s a special day in my family, that’s all.” Savannah wasn’t sure how much to divulge.

“C’mon guys!” Amy called as they made their way back to the picnic table in the twilight. “Time for dessert! Kline, can you bring Danny-Boy out here?” She looked at Savannah again as they set the dishes on the table. “What special day?” she asked quietly.

Savannah looked into Amy’s kind blue eyes for a moment. They looked like eyes that connected to a soul that could be trusted. “My mom died on September twenty-second.”

This is dedicated…

One of my favorite things to do when I’m getting a book ready for publication is to write the dedication. I think of the dedication as a little stream of love and gratitude heading out into the world towards whoever/whatever inspired me. . .

"I thought the novel had an interesting concept of a mother/aunt looking over their child. . . . If you like cozy romance with elements of magical realism, then this is the book for you."

Heidi Reads... - Guest Post

A Thing About Libraries

I have loved books and reading, and anything to do with books and reading, since I was a little girl. In fact, my mother loved to tell the story of how, when I was 5 years old, she began reading me The Wizard of Oz, a few chapters at a time. Then one night when she was sick and couldn’t read to me, I picked up the book and finished it myself! . .

"This is a super cute quick read. It is a very light hearted read which is surprising because their is so much loss, loneliness, and heartache. I enjoyed this book because the love story wasn’t overwhelming and was mixed with just enough sadness to seem realistic. You get to experience these intense, scary, and heartfelt emotions along side the main characters, which was my favorite part. I loved these characters and was so excited about the ending!"

regallywritten - Review

"Reading this novel was like diving into the water of the romance genre, and being completely and totally immersed in a refreshing wave.

It has so many unique qualities to it that I loved, and that make it stand out in contrast to the typical ideas that most authors of the genre fall back on."

"Her journey is sweet, joyful, and enduring."

Some ancient cultures taught that ordinary physical reality is not the only reality available to us. I used to ruminate on that teaching occasionally when I was alive. I entertained the idea that there had to be something greater than us to gift us with such precious beauty. But now I know. There is so much more than the physical limitations of earthly life. There is so much more love, so much more light, and so many more ways that we are all connected.

". , , love watching them build up their friendship as they are learning how to trust and heal from previous failed relationships, while also just being real with each other. . . . This really was a feel-good romance that warmed my heart after a long and crazy week."

Dragonflies at Night:
More Than a Love Story
By Anne Marie Bennett
Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 365 Pages
September 22, 2020 by KaleidoSoul Media

A dragonfly brings a mother’s love to a grieving daughter.

Meet Savannah, the thirty-something owner of Life Celebrations, a party planning business. Despite losing both parents as a teenager, Savannah is creating a positive life for herself, surrounded by friends and co-workers who are now her family. But she also has a secret—as much as she wants to settle down and have children, she is afraid to, for fear of getting cancer and having to leave them without their mother, as she herself was left behind years ago.

Meet Deirdre Rose, Savannah’s mother. She continues to watch over Savannah, who feels deeply connected to her mother whenever she sees a dragonfly.

Now meet Ben, a thirty-something recording artist who is good-looking, talented, and a household name. Despite his fame, Ben is lonely. He trusts few people because it seems everyone wants something from him instead of getting to know who he really is.

Savannah and Ben cross paths when they meet at a yoga retreat in the Massachusetts Berkshires. They are drawn to each other’s creativity and outlook on life. She sees beyond his celebrity and he admires her strength in what she’s had to overcome.

What happens when the retreat ends and they go their separate ways? Will they be able to make a long distance relationship work? Can Savannah put aside her fears, and will Ben allow himself to be truly vulnerable?

Above all . . . what message do Deirdre Rose and Dragonfly have for both of them?

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope readers will take away that love and relationships provide the biggest treasure of our lives. Rather than locking love away to keep it hidden, sharing it is one of the hardest, but most worthwhile, aspects of life. Sometimes we have to look within and accept ourselves in those relationships, but acceptance can come where we least expect it, even from those we least expect it. In Caleb’s case, he finds love and acceptance for the real Caleb at Lucie’s house, from Ethel the pig to Lucie herself. For Lucie, redemption started with accepting herself and not letting her inner self stay hidden forever.

"At the heart of this novel, Agler presents the case for second chances – in life, in success, and in romance.

This is a sweet, clean, heart-breaking, and definitely heart-warming read that I didn’t want to put down and really enjoyed reading. . . . Fans of the genre as well as those who read the first book by the author are sure to like this installment."

That Lucie of yesteryear, the debutante whose outfits matched her purses, didn’t exist anymore. Her father had always chucked her chin and told her she was tougher than she thought. He’d been right. In the past two years, she’d learned how to make Hamburger Helper stretch for three nights and how to accept kindness with a smile.

“That Lucie had to grow up.”

Among the Reads - Review

"Lucie’s menagerie was fun! The author managed to show the unique “personalities” of each of her unique pets. Not only were their names fun but so were their quirks. I loved the way Ladybug, the English bulldog, always sat on Caleb’s feet. And Ethel, the huge miniature pig was so funny!

This small-town romance was a sweet story. There were several ahh inspiring moments."

"This is a well-written story of a man being torn between several conflicts, a single mother's effort to prove herself to her community, in spite of the odds. It is a story of sorting out true friendship and of individuals searching deep within themselves for who they truly are. . . . It left one with a uplifted feeling."

Spying was the more accurate word, but that was harsher to his ears.

Then came the words he’d never expected to hear after all these years.

Lucie considered him her best friend.

Friends didn’t spy on each other.

Friends didn’t lie to each other.

Becky on Books - Review

"A Ranger for the Twins is a sweet, slow smolder friends-to-lovers romance, and my first read from this author. It’s Tanya Agler‘s second set in Hollydale (after The Sheriff’s Second Chance), but it works just fine as a standalone. . . . Everything manages to come together at the end with HEA achieved and Lucie, Caleb, Mattie, and Ethan’s situations all coming out better than they went into the book, which I closed with a happy sigh."

A yellow Victorian caught his eye and he slowed his pace. Then he squinted at what used to be the most impressive house in town. Paint peeled off the second-story shutters, one of which was slightly askew, while the white picket fence bordering the front yard needed pressure washing. He read the sign on the fence: Don’t Let the Pigs Out. He rubbed his eyes and reread the words. He hadn’t made any mistakes.

"This book is part of the Harlequin Heartwarming line and it truly fits this description! You will laugh and you may cry, but I feel sure that you'll enjoy A Ranger for the Twins by Tanya Agler. If you're looking for a clean and sweet romance that tugs at your heart, you will want to take this trip to Hollydale and the Great Smoky Mountains!"

E-Romance News - Excerpt

Lucie gazed upward before running her hands through her hair and looking his way. “For two years, I’ve been accused of every crime imaginable. There’s nothing like finding out your husband, who’s now my ex, is a first-rate scumbag.” Lowering her voice, she glanced toward the living room and clenched her teeth. “So many people didn’t believe me. So many times, I thought I wouldn’t get to see my children grow up because I’d be behind bars. So many times, I thought of you and missed my friend, the person who always treated me with respect.”

Splashes of Joy - Review

"I so much enjoyed this sweet Heartwarming romance. Lucie and Caleb [work] so well together and their budding relationship is fun and interesting to watch. . . . There were a lot of characters, different yet interesting and the story was quite realistic because I felt I was among friends while I was reading and for that reason I didn’t want the book to end. My favorite characters were the adorable twins. Their sweetness adds an element to the story that just makes it shine. . . . If you are ready for a sweet Heartwarming romance, Hallmark style, this is a great book for you to check out. This is sure a book for you Romance readers out there. And it is a nice clean one too!!"

Pause for Tales - Review

"I cannot imagine how hard it would be to be judged for the criminal doings of your spouse. . . . This was a story of starting over from the very bottom. . . the author did not sugarcoat anybody's pain. And the pain of losing their life long savings was palpable. As well as Lucie's pain of being judged unfairly. Caleb balanced out the story well."

"After reading A Ranger for the Twins, I know I need to read the first book in the series. I loved the author’s writing and definitely want to read more by her. . . . A Ranger for the Twins is a book I enjoyed from start to finish."

quirkybookreads - Review

"I really enjoyed reading A Ranger for the Twins. I liked how both Lucie and Caleb grew together as characters especially as the sparks begin to fly. . . . I would recommend A Ranger for the Twins to everyone who loves sweet romance books and especially if you love Mills & Boon."

"A Ranger for the Twins really is a Heartwarming story and one that had me rooting for Lucie Decker and her sweet twins. . . . Lucie and her twins aren’t the only characters who will steal your heart, nope, there is also a handsome, helpful Ranger named, Caleb Spindler and some quirky pets to steal your heart and put a smile on your face. . . . I loved this sweet novel which is why I recommend it to readers of most ages."

Kimber Li - Excerpt

Lucie grabbed one of the clips and snapped it. “Caleb Spindler is back in town.”

“Caleb? The Hero of Hollydale?” Mitzi started applying the cream mixture to Georgie’s hair. “We should approach him about endorsing the center while the curling iron is still hot.”

Mitzi laughed at her own joke while Lucie cracked a smile.

“That might be difficult considering I kicked him out of my house last night.”

"A Ranger for the Twins by Tanya Agler is a story about the past blending into the present. . . I love all the scenes with Lucie and Caleb going back and forth on trying to understand their feelings of attraction.

If you enjoy contemporary clean romance with a twist of a past and a present relationship, then you’ll love A Ranger for the Twins by Tanya Agler."

Moving back to Hollydale was supposed to fill that family-sized hole in him, the one he’d dug when he moved to Yellowstone, where he hadn’t known a soul. While the job was professionally fulfilling, there’d been something lacking. Something green like the pines dotting the Great Smokies. Something deep like the depths of Timber River. Something he yearned to reconnect with.

"The novel is a sweet and clean romance about two people learning to let go of the past and trusting each other. The story was a cozy read about two people falling in love when they been hurt in the past. . . if you are a fan of cozy romance novels then this will be your type of book."

While Caleb had been away, Lucie had gone from the town sweetheart to the town pariah who housed unwanted animals while starting a business to support this household. In that same time, Caleb had gone from the town no-name whose surgery sidelined him to the town hero who worked around the clock to make sure he was never without sufficient eggs in different baskets.

"I appreciated their friendship and Caleb's determination to help Lucie to be a success. I admired Lucie's determination to reestablish herself in town as an independent woman who was free of her ex-husbands misdeeds. I wanted the two of them to figure it out, because they are good for each other. . . .It's a fun ride to read. I may have to go back and read the first one (because I did enjoy those supporting characters!) and will keep an eye out for future installments."

". . . Hollydale is my new favourite small towne I can't wait to revisit!! Here's to more installments and more lives being healed and restored through Agler's vision for her growing community where hearts and live intersect with a lot of love and hope! Agler has a style for Contemporary Romance which is smooth as key lime pie and as charmingly lovely to read as a cool Autumn afternoon."

"I really enjoy these Harlequin Heartwarming stories because they truly are heartwarming. They make for clean, sweet, and quick reads, which are all positives in my book."

Then again, that made it sound as if she wanted him to give her inside information. She shuddered. She’d never take advantage of their friendship in that way.

Nor would she ever have him risk being accused of any impropriety that could jeopardize his professional reputation. She had to keep her distance.

She and Caleb would be friends and nothing more. Like they’d agreed.

"I loved Lucie. She is so well rounded and just so real. . . . The book is very well written and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down."

"I found the story to be sweet, warm, and satisfyingly healing for both the hurting Lucie and Caleb. The twins were absolutely adorable and I really loved getting to see all of the characters changing and growing throughout the story"

Hallie Reads - Review

"Tanya Agler’s A Ranger for the Twins is delightful. I enjoyed getting to know Lucie and Caleb—and Lucie’s entertaining twins—and even with the complications, their story proves to be heartwarming from beginning to end. I definitely recommend this book to readers in need of a contemporary romance."

His hand reached out and touched her sleeve. His warmth sank in, a tease of spring after a cold winter, and she wanted to lean into that, but she halted and met his gaze.

“Former friendship? You’re revoking my friendship card?” His eyes twinkled.

Harlie's Books - Review

"Ms. Agler has my heart now. I found her refreshing, her characters popped off the page, and couldn’t help but smile the whole time I read this book. . . . if you are looking to sit down and a read a fantastic friends to lovers story with one spunky heroine and an ordinary guy turned hero, then this book is for you. You will fall in love with them, the kids and especially the animals."

Bizwings Blog - Review

"Learning trust, forgiveness, and how to love again are all lessons learned in the storyline. The characters are real to life. Lucie is a down-to-earth loving mother of twins and is determined. Caleb is loving, caring, and steadfast, standing behind Luice giving her support just when she needs it. The twins Ethan and Mattie are sweet and entertaining children.

The ending wrapped up everything nicely. A very sweet and uplifting story. Highly recommended."

A slight twinkle returned to Lucie’s eyes as they dared him to follow her instructions. Caleb was game for anything. Once. He settled on the couch. Ethel followed him and jumped up next to him. His eyes widened, and every muscle in his body went on full alert. “Is she allowed up here?”

Lucie laughed, the sound music to his ears. “Are you going to tell her different?”

Good point. “What do I do now?”

"Tanya Agler’s A Ranger for the Twins is an adorable contemporary romance that touches the heart and tickles the funny bone. Tanya Agler has written a sweet, sparkling and scintillating tale full of humour, emotion and intensity featuring a strong, resourceful and courageous heroine readers will root for and a charismatic hero they will fall in love with."

"This book contains well written characters. I felt bad for Lucie for what she went through with her ex husband. I can't imagine my world crashing down in a moment. The storyline is flowing and contains sweet romance."

What inspired you to write THE GENESIS OF SEVEN?

I completely agree with the philosophy you should write the book you always wanted to read, and for me that is what drove me to write The Genesis of Seven. When I was younger, it seemed no matter where I looked, be it books or even movies, angels were always portrayed in a way that just did not agree with me. Either their stories were based on romances with humans, or they were pitted against each other with evil intentions. Because of this, I wanted to give the angels a new narrative, one that portrayed them as a group, focused on their origin story, and described the circumstances that led to the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

3 KEY INSPIRATIONS BEHIND THE GENESIS OF SEVEN

The two biggest places where I draw my inspiration from are books and pop culture. No matter what story I’m writing, these factors always influence me. With The Genesis of Seven, there were three particular inspirations that motivated me to write this story. . .

"I've read other YA books about Angels including a love story. Fallen by Lauren Kate even includes an origin story. TGoS doesn't have a love story! (There is the start of a crush on the girl next door. The angels tried to meddle in Jordan's love life. It was so awkward and cute! That was a brief set up and seemed natural at the moment) Its all action and adventure. The stakes are high and the angels have quirks. I appreciate that so much."

“Run!” Sister Helen shouted.

Somehow, my body obliged. My legs carried me down the alleyway, past dumpsters and trashcans. At the street, I stopped briefly to figure out where to go next. I glanced at the paper and realized I had a bit of distance to cover. The address was near Central Park, but the orphanage was in the opposite direction. In fact, the orphanage wasn’t even in Manhattan. There wasn’t time to figure out a route though. At the sound of running footsteps, I looked over my shoulder and saw two men dressed in black fast approaching.

Without a second thought, I broke into a sprint and headed right.

"First thing's first, I really liked how this was in no way a romance. It was so refreshing to have a book that isn't all mushy. . . . Also, it is important to note that this is a FANTASY book. It is in no way meant to reflect what actually is and I felt like the book was quite clear about that.

All in all, if you are looking for a unique read that shows you the world, The Genesis of Seven would be a great choice."

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Those were the words Dante faced when he entered Hell. Perhaps if they were posted above the subway this afternoon, I would have proceeded with the same caution.

The New York subway system was a strange and peculiar place. An underground metropolis full of noise and activity, where anything and everything occurred. I liked to compare it to the Underworld as I imagined it worked in much the same way, with spirits being ferried across the River Styx like people being transported through the city. Yet the main difference between Hell and the subway was all those who entered typically resurfaced every day, sometimes multiple times a day, without being scathed.

Unlike me, whose life would be forever changed by the simple act of bumping shoulders.

"The Genesis of Seven is great start to Sara M Schaller’s The Empyrean Trilogy. . . . I was entertained from start to finish. It was full of action and adventure that kept me engaged throughout. . . . I recommend this one for readers who enjoy a good and well written fantasy."

Bookishlifetime - Review

"I absolutely loved this book. It was show-stopping and I cannot wait to read the next two books to see where Sara takes this story next.

I highly recommend this series to any YA Fantasy fans. . ."

She scanned the ID and looked up at him skeptically. “Is that supposed to impress me?”

He sighed. “No, it’s supposed to show you we don’t mean any harm.”

She handed the ID back to him. “You still want me to believe you’re here because of a family emergency?”

Exasperated, Uriel opened his mouth to argue, but Zadkiel spoke first. “Just because we don’t look like Raphael doesn’t mean we’re not his family.”

JORDAN'S TIPS IN WORKING WITH AN ARCHANGEL

Listen when they tell you to do something

The angels have far more experience dealing with the fallen then I do, so I would advise to listen to them. I notice whenever I don’t listen to them, or whenever I am left to decide the outcome of a situation on my own, it usually ends up badly. Mainly with me getting hurt.

I left the library and approached the front door, glancing through the window in the hallway to get a better glimpse of the person outside. All I could see was the figure of a girl. The angels followed, and when they saw the figure too, they backed off.

I walked into the turret, grabbed the knob, and opened the door.

The girl standing on the other side smiled at me and said, “Hi, I’m Naomi.”

"This was one of those books that made me say….just one more chapter. Until I found the sun coming up the next morning just so I could know what happens. It had me on the edge of my seat with crazy anticipation!! . . . Ahh- now I definitely can’t wait for the next book in this series!"

Library Lady's Kid Lit - Review & Interview

"The Genesis of Seven is a great fantasy novel. . . . The book is a great read if readers can view it as purely fantasy (fiction) made up by the author. Once I did that, the book drew me in and the intensity of the plot made me want to keep reading. The Genesis of Seven is the first book in Sara Schaller’s The Empyrean Trilogy. It ends in a cliff-hanger leaving the reader anxious for the next book."

Which character did you enjoy writing most?

This is a really hard question because I think there’s something about every character that I enjoy writing, even the fallen. But if I had to choose, I think Astrid and Tabitha are the ones I enjoyed writing the most. I know those are two characters, but you can’t have one without the other. Why I enjoy writing them is because I get to have fun with them. They’re a bit crazy, a bit sassy, and a bit unconventional. They also tease Satan so much, which brings a lot of humor to the story. Astrid’s divinations in particular were I something I enjoyed because it really stretched my writing skills to write in rhyme and verse.

@the.b00kreader - Review

Ahh did I love this book! Angels, demons, the devil, a quest to save them all. What's not to love? . . . The Genesis of Seven is the first book in the Empyrean trilogy and is a wonderful introduction to the world Sara has created. I cannot wait to see what's in store for Jordan and the angels in the upcoming books!"

quirkybookreads - Review

Straight away Genesis of Seven takes you on a journey of interesting events including some amazing biblical retelling. . . . I found the more I read the more I had to know and before I knew it I had finished The Genesis of Seven. I look forward to reading the next book…

“What are you doing?” I asked, sliding open the door.

I caught him off-guard. He jumped and quickly turned to face me.

“Nothing. Go back inside,” he replied, composing himself.

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

“I’ve only known you for a short time, but now you decide to become secretive?”

Obviously guilty, he relented. “They have come with messages,” he said.

"This was such an enjoyable book that I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy! . . . I don’t read a lot of fantasy books. They really have to be something to catch my eye, and this one fits the bill! The story pulled me in from the beginning. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs. The action kept me actively engaged throughout the entire story."

"This book combines Christian myths and ideals with fantasy to create an amazing story. . . . As it turns out, I couldn't put this book down, and I mean literally. I had it with me everywhere I went because it was that good! Thank goodness this is the first of a trilogy because more books would be awesome. Well written, solidly paced, developed characters to cheer on and vivid details make The Genesis of Seven an ideal read. I recommend for sure!"

@bookishly_tiff - Review

"There was so much to enjoy with this book. As started there's multiple points of view which has always been a weakness of mine but the pacing is almost perfection and it was so easy to not want to put this one down. . . . Do I recommend this book? Absolutely! The wait for the next book is honestly entirely too long!"

JORDAN'S TIPS IN EVADING THE FALLEN

1. Run

The easiest way to evade the fallen is simply to outrun them. I’ve done it once before and it worked out pretty well. Granted, I don’t think I could do it again, so this might be a one-time thing. . .

Rockin' Book Reviews - Review & Guest Post

"The story is well-written, holds a bit of humor, a lot of suspense and intrigue. The characters are well-defined and the background scenes are fairly easy to visualize. . . . As a whole, the book is intriguing, captivating, sensitive, poignant and ends in a way which leaves the reader anxious for more."

THE ORIGINS OF MY BOOK TITLE

It's natural for readers to be curious about book titles—they set the stage for the book, possibly even the entire series, and are a brief glimpse of what to expect from the narrative. It's equally natural for readers to be curious about what meaning book titles hold. . .

With our luggage situated, I followed Gabriel through the airport and out into the parking garage, where I stopped suddenly.

“You have a car here?”

“Yes,” he replied, not breaking step. “I have a car in New York too. I don’t drive much there though.” He finally stopped in front of a silver Lexus RX. Unlocking the car, he began to load his chest and bag into the trunk.

I stared in disbelief. “You can drive?”

"Such a fantabulous book that kept my interest from page one until the end. . . . This young adult novel was just wow! I know I know I keep saying that but this story just took my breath away! . . . I highly recommend this book."

THE COVER DESIGN AND PROCESS

When I started on my publishing journey back in 2018, I commissioned an artist to design the cover for my book. The work was gorgeous and phenomenal, but I knew in my gut it wasn’t the cover.

I worked as a graphic designer for five years, and I had an idea in my head of what my cover looked like, but for some reason it was impossible for me to execute it myself. I thought getting another artist to do it would be the best scenario, but the artwork just didn’t match the image in my head and it was too hard to verbalize what I was visualizing. . .

With that notion threatening his only family and the safety of his newfound friends, Jordan must do whatever it takes to protect the ones he loves and help the archangels succeed. If that means sacrificing all he thought he knew to go to war with the devil himself? Bring it on.
