Author Interview

What inspired you to write THE GENESIS OF SEVEN?

I completely agree with the philosophy you should write the book you always wanted to read, and for me that is what drove me to write The Genesis of Seven. When I was younger, it seemed no matter where I looked, be it books or even movies, angels were always portrayed in a way that just did not agree with me. Either their stories were based on romances with humans, or they were pitted against each other with evil intentions. Because of this, I wanted to give the angels a new narrative, one that portrayed them as a group, focused on their origin story, and described the circumstances that led to the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

The Genesis of Seven is a story full of adventure that follows the journey of eighteen-year-old Jordan Conway, who must travel the world with Archangel Gabriel to reunite all the angels and save the world from Satan and his fallen forces.

What challenged you about writing this story?

The most challenging part about writing this story was the multiple points of view. I always knew this was how I wanted to write the book, but it was a lot easier to plan it than execute it. What was so difficult was trying to make each voice standout and be different from the others, while at the same time creating a cohesive narrative. Some characters were easier to write than others because they felt more natural. For instance, Jordan’s chapters were by far the easiest while Satan’s were the hardest.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

The character I relate most to is Jordan because it’s easier for me to put myself in his shoes. Many of his decisions and reactions are probably the way I would handle the situation if I was randomly thrown into a world full of angels. I also can relate with him in other ways like how he’s not very athletic, or how he doesn’t have many friends because he prefers to be by himself even though he is very naturally friendly.

I think the biggest factor that is a direct link between him and I is the fact that he is at a transition period in his life and is utterly confused about what he wants to do. I knew that I wanted to go to college, much like Jordan, and I had an inkling of the subjects I was interested in, but if you asked me what career or occupation I wanted, it was hard for me to answer. I always get anxious with periods of change because facing the unknown is scary, and I think Jordan does feel some of this, but the angels act as a perfect distraction to take his mind off the future decisions he has to make. Yet, I also know that the journey he is on is the best scenario for him because it will shape him and his future decisions more than he knows, which is something I experienced and benefitted from.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

There are three main things I hope readers take with them after they read The Genesis of Seven. One, I want readers to take with them some enjoyment and entertainment because that’s the true purpose of books. Two, I want readers to take with them a different perspective on the angels and be introduced to them in a way they have never seen. Finally, for those readers interested in the more hidden details, I want them to discover the symbolism in the book and be inspired by varying interpretations.

What is something about you that is unique or that we may not know?

When I was a kid, I almost got held back a grade because I was struggling with reading, so my mom sent me to a summer reading program taught by nuns. All in all, something you may not know about me is that I didn’t think writing would be an interest of mine because my love of reading came at a late age, and the nuns in this book are inspired by those that taught me to read.

Eighteen-year-old Jordan Conway has always wanted to help people, but helping seven archangels to achieve their divine duty was never quite what he had in mind…

When Jordan is entrusted by the head nun of his orphanage to deliver a mysterious backpack to a New York City address, he comes unexpectedly face-to-face with Archangel Gabriel. Their acquaintance fast uncovers a labyrinth of secrets that connect Jordan’s once-normal life to an ancient heavenly prophecy. Now, he must help Gabriel to reunite the archangels before evil forces grow too strong.

Soon, Jordan and Gabriel find themselves on a divine quest across the globe, while deep in the pits of Hell, Satan plots his return to earth. To gain control, however, Satan needs the powerful prophetic objects locked safe inside Jordan’s backpack—and the devil will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

With that notion threatening his only family and the safety of his newfound friends, Jordan must do whatever it takes to protect the ones he loves and help the archangels succeed. If that means sacrificing all he thought he knew to go to war with the devil himself? Bring it on.

Author Interview

What inspired you to write The Broken Prince series?

I was in high school playing basketball in the backyard with my younger sister. I remember saying that all I wanted to be able to do was write books that showed light in darkness, ones that reflected real world problems within a fantasy storyworld. I’d always liked stories about the brooding, handsome princes who rescue the maidens, but I didn’t want my story to be a cliche. So I just went from there, attempting to create a book that wasn’t your typical YA fantasy with either a helpless maiden and dashing prince, or a helpless prince and don’t-need-a-man girl.

For those new to the series, what should they know?

It’s not hardcore fantasy, but an easy read hopefully readers not familiar with the genre can also enjoy. It’s not just for fantasy fans: it’s for anyone who needs to be reminded that love conquerors even the darkest hearts.

If you could sum up book two, THE CROWNLESS KING, in one sentence, what would you say?

Dragons, stories that come alive, brooding princes, warrior maidens, and unexpected endings that make you gasp, these are a few of my favorite things...

(Kudos to those who understand my Sound of Music reference....Sorry, I’m a dork ;) )

What challenged you about writing this story?

Me. There’s a lot of anxiety about writing book two, because I know for me as a reader I don’t always enjoy a sequel. So going into that knowing that people had high expectations was very daunting. However, I also had the issue that I created these characters back in high school, and now attempting to rewrite them for my adult brain was a challenge and very cringe-worthy.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

All my characters have bits and pieces of me, and reflect me at different stages in my life. Right now I relate to my MC Sabriel in “The Crownless King.” She’s always trying to prove herself, when deep down the only person she’s really trying to prove herself to is....herself. I relate to that on so many levels. And when you live like that, constantly trying to be better and better and reach perfection, you’re only going to fall short.

What is something about you that is unique or we may not know?

I have five younger siblings and we were all homeschooled and my dad is a pastor. The perfect recipe for questions from strangers wanting to know if we were sheltered in the house as kids and forced to memorize scripture. No to that, but yes we did own a fifteen passenger van. ;)

Author Interview

What inspired you to write For the Love of Fiber Series?

After seventeen years in the Chicago suburbs, we moved back to my native Wisconsin. On the verge of being empty-nesters, we decided to move to the country and a more relaxed life-style. Answering an ad in the local paper I joined a ‘learn to spin group’. I’d always been a knitter and the thought of spinning my very own yarn added a whole new dimension. I soon found myself the owner of several Jacob sheep. I joined a group of local fiber artists who taught me so many things, among them being that crafting and women’s friendships are such an integral part of many women’s lives.

I was inspired to weave craft and art into my stories because to me, each craft I learned was a personal growth issue. I had to practice patience with learning to spin a good yarn, use math and dexterity with weaving and to use wool as an artist uses paint in felting. Along with learning these crafts I realized the importance of them and friendships down through generations. I’m hoping to pass this love on to my grandchildren.

If you could sum up each of the two books in one sentence, what would you say?

The Spin I’m In - When newly widowed Martha discovers her husband had been leading a double life, she determines to find the person she put aside to become the perfect wife and mother and finds friendship and help within a group of local fiber artists.

It Never Felt So Good - Struggling artist Cara Olson moves home to Wisconsin to care for her ailing grandmother and while there learns that the definition of success is totally individual to each person.

What challenged you about writing this series?

I’ve always been intrigued with stories of women starting over and finding their own place in life. I wanted my characters to be ordinary women with real, everyday problems—things we can all relate to—be it family, friends or career.

I’ve worked for years studying the craft of writing and like other crafts, it was a personal growth experience. Along the way I’ve met so many wonderful and sharing writers and I wouldn’t be here today without them. Writing can be a lonely life without friends to share the joys and frustrations.

Which character do you relate to the most to and why?

I guess it would be Carol. As the mother of five, the grandmother of seventeen, and a nurse, I can relate to most everyday problems in family life. Also, as a cancer survivor I will never forget hearing those fear-inducing words, “You have cancer.”

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read the series?

I hope readers will realize the strength we women can gather from each other and always from family. Plus, a little humor goes a long way to putting joy in life.

What is something about me that is unique or we may not know?

I guess the most unique thing about me is my family background. I consider my family the original Brady Bunch, only on a gigantic scale. My father was a widower with six children and my mother a widow with four. They married and had five children—myself  having the dubious honor of being number fourteen. I learned a lot about characters in that wonderful, loving family and draw on them often in my stories.

Another unique detail related to the books is that both covers are original artwork painted by my daughter, Molly Bowman Johnson, and photographed by my son. David Bowman. I’m so proud of these covers!

About the Author

Born in Wisconsin to an original Brady Bunch, I had the dubious honor of being #14 in the family. As a result, I’ll never run out of characters. The early years of my marriage were spent moving around the country with my engineer husband, collecting interesting stories and characters along the way. I picked up my first romance after a particularly stressful shift at a suburban Chicago hospital where I worked as an RN. Hours later, bleary-eyed and exhausted, but able to sleep because the story affirmed that good things can happen to good people, I was hooked.

After seventeen years in the Chicago suburbs we returned to Wisconsin and a new life of country living. After a local class in spinning, I decided it would be fun to have my own source of wool. Several years and many animals later, I found a new source of humor for my stories. I’ve always loved animals and you’ll find many of them populate my books. My stories are about real people trying to make it in this crazy, sometimes funny, sometimes sad world—but always with an ending that will renew your faith in love and life.

When I’m not writing, you’ll find me with my family or out walking in my fields, spinning wool, knitting or weaving, but always listening to the interesting stories of those characters living in my head.

We're launching the Book & Bookstagram Tours for SILVER MOON by Jenny Knipfer! #SMBkTour

Author Interview

What inspired you to write SILVER MOON?

Silver Moon is the third book in a four-part series and follows the story of the children of some of the characters in Blue Moon, about twenty years after Blue Moon leaves off. When I had finished Blue Moon, I knew I was going to write about Luis and Oshki, but I didn’t know how to start until one day I went fishing with my husband to our favorite backwater slough on a cool autumn day and inspiration struck. As I watched the cool water swirl in front of me, I wondered what it would be like to be submerged in that tempestuous liquid, fighting for my life. I set down my fishing pole and wrote the opening prologue to Silver Moon.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

It’s a tale of courage and hope in the darkest of times.

What challenged you about writing this story?

I set Silver Moon during WWI, and I knew next to nothing about that time period and even less about Canada’s involvement in the war. I did a lot of research, but I enjoy learning about history. I hope I represent the war accurately and believably through the men from Webaashi Bay, Ontario, Luis, Oshki, and Jimmy, who fight on the Western Front in various roles.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

In this book compared to the others, my life has less reflective quality in the characters’ direct experiences. I have never been in the kind of situations during wartime that my characters faced, but I fight against a kind of war every day. I have MS, and my health is a constant battle that never lets up. The voice which spoke to me the most as I wrote was Luis, the main protagonist.

Luis struggles with his identity as a spy and who he is as a person. He gets lost in translation, so to speak, but finds his way back with the help of friends, loved ones, and a little faith. After the fact, he has a hard time justifying the choices he had to make during his time as an active spy.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope readers will know that even on the most difficult of days, there is hope.

What is something about you that is unique or we may not know?

I started my series, By the Light of the Moon, twenty years ago, but with work and family life got busy. I set aside the first book, Ruby Moon, after about five chapters and didn’t pick it up again until 2018 when I had to quit my job as a floral designer due to increased disability from MS. Wondering what to fill my time with, I thought of the book I’d started many years prior and resurrected it from the depths of an old computer.

I would have never guessed then that I would be here today—three books published and many more waiting to be. It just goes to show that sometimes the best things in life happen when we get side-tracked by unforeseen circumstances.

Silver Moon
(By the Light of the Moon #3)

Christian Historical Fiction
Paperback & ebook, 411 Pages

A tale of courage and hope in the darkest of times...

Silver Moon, the third book in the series: By the Light of the Moon, paints a stunning and poignant picture of life on the home front in Webaashi Bay, Ontario, and of three men who are a part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI.

Shamed into joining the war, the tide turns for Luis Wilson when he is steered into the depths of espionage. Injured and presumed missing, will he lose his heart to the very woman who presented him with a white feather?

Oshki and Jimmy offer a grim perspective on life in the trenches. They despair of ever returning home to the women who hold their hearts.

Meanwhile, Lily fights for the cause in her own way and rallies the female troops at home as prejudices run high and the local cafe owner is accused of being a spy.

Will the women of Webaashi Bay receive their men back unscathed? Can the power of love win out over insurmountable odds? All this drama and more plays out under the light of a silver moon.
Fans of WWI historical fiction, Christian historical fiction, and literary fiction will find Silver Moon a moving, powerful read!
