Author Interview

What inspired you to write How Sweet It Is?

In 2017, I was reading my well-loved Bible (the one I’ve used since 1997) which is full of highlights and many notes and dates in the margins. Suddenly I wondered what this Bible might mean to members of my family after I'm gone. Will one of my daughters or grandchildren or great-grandchildren one day leaf through this book and hear God speaking to them because of something I wrote therein? This sparked the idea for the Legacy of Faith series where an ancestor’s Bible would touch the lives of those who hadn’t known him.

During the course of writing the series, I fell completely under the spell of Andrew Henning (the ancestor) and his family, including the great- and great-great-grandchildren who became the heroes and heroine of the books. So I suppose I would have to say that my inspiration for How Sweet It Is was primarily the need to give readers a satisfying ending to the series, to let them enjoy, one more time, the wisdom that Andrew found and shared, via his Bible, with those who came after him.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

He's lost his brother and she's lost her dream, and together they might find what they’re really looking for.

What challenged you about writing this story?

The greatest challenge was probably the time setting for Andrew’s story. The historical thread that runs through the series began in Who I Am with You during the Great Depression and continued in Cross My Heart during World War II. In How Sweet It Is, the setting is 1969. Although it was a tumultuous time, it wasn’t on the same scale as those other years-long events, so I had to find “smaller” ways to draw readers into the past.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

There are pieces of me in every character I write, bits of my experiences and my thoughts and my desires in each character who appears on the page. In the contemporary part of How Sweet It Is, I suppose I relate the most with Holly because she feels buried by debt and unwelcome responsibilities. Plus she’s seen a dream die. I’ve experienced all of those things and know how overwhelming and unending it can seem.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

First, I hope readers will find a sweet romance at the center of the story. I enjoy writing about two people who don’t want to fall in love but who fall in love anyway. Second and most important, I pray that readers will take one step closer to God because of something they find in How Sweet It Is

What is something about you that is unique or that we may not know?

Something you may not know about me is that my great-great-grandfather, Gideon M. Ashmore, was an antislavery innkeeper in Illinois. In the summer of 1845, he hid Anthony and Jane Bryant and their children, escaped slaves who had been brought up from Kentucky to work a farm owned by Robert Matson. They were kept in Illinois longer than the law allowed and ran away. My great-great-grandfather went to an attorney by the name of Abraham Lincoln, but Lincoln had already been consulted by Matson so couldn’t represent the Bryants. Fortunately, Lincoln did not win this particular case, and the Bryants gained their freedom. It’s said that Matson returned to Kentucky without paying Lincoln his fee. And that’s my distant connection to Abraham Lincoln.

He lost his brother. She lost her dream. Together, they might find what they’re really looking for.

Holly Stanford is doing the best she can with the restaurant she inherited from her late uncle. But after her fiancé abandons her and the business, Holly regrets having given up her dream of becoming a pastry chef. Now a few bad financial decisions might cost her everything, including her hope for the future.

Jed Henning has done well with his new company despite his prodigal brother’s behavior. When Jed‘s father, the controlling member of the board of directors, temporarily suspends operations until his sons work out their differences, Jed resentfully chases his brother, Chris, to Boise. There Jed rents a basement apartment from Holly and hopes to convince Chris to get his act together before their company collapses.

Unaware that Holly is the one person who can help him get through to Chris, Jed starts the tough work of reconciliation armed with little more than a few family photographs, a stack of old letters, and a Bible that belonged to his great-grandfather, Andrew Henning. And as romance blossoms between Holly and Jed, the story of Jed’s great-grandfather highlights the power of God across the generations and the legacy of a family’s courageous faith.

Author Interview

What inspired you to write A Cowgirl's Dream

I have been involved with horses for most of my life and love happy ever afters. As an Aussie, I wanted to write a character that embodied a lot of the cowgirls that I know. I also wanted to write a story about the strong women in rodeo, their sisterhoods and men they choose to love.

If you could sum up the book in one sentence, what would you say?

True love doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams, take it from an Aussie cowgirl and Brazilian bull rider.

Which character do you relate to the most and why?

Definitely Frankie. She isn’t perfect, she has to work hard for everything that comes her way. She also suffers from imposter syndrome. Now that I think about it, there might be a bit of me in her.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

If he is the right man you won’t have to choose between love and your dreams, instead he will lift you up. And no matter what, your friends will catch you if you fall.

What has been the most surprising, challenging and rewarding about being a debut author?

The most challenging has been dealing with the same issues everyone has in 2020. Having to add home schooling my children to writing a novel was not something that I could have factored in. This year I turn 40 and the satisfaction of being able to say that I have finally done it, I have published my work, it seems surreal to me.

What is something about you that is unique or that we may not know about you?

Um, besides being an Aussie? Before I started writing I combined competitive horse riding with working as an arborist (yep, I climbed trees with chainsaws for a job).

Frankie dreams of being a champion barrel racer. When the opportunity of a lifetime knocks on her door, she moves halfway across the globe to chase it. After having her heart broken, she’s determined to focus on her ambitions. That means no time for cowboys, even if he is bloody cute.

Luciano is well on his way to getting everything he has ever dreamed of. That is, until an Aussie cowgirl crashes into his world, setting his soul on fire. He knows what it takes to get to the top and Frankie has it in spades. Now, all he has to do is convince her to see beyond the suave exterior and give him a chance.

Finally, Frankie has a shot at the championship buckle, but when photos appear of Luciano on the internet, she has to decide whether to stay or walk away. Is she kidding herself, can she have it all? Can Frankie find her courage to trust in love and still chase her Cowgirl’s dream?

Author Interview

What inspired you to write The Melody of the Mulberries

My mom is the inspiration for both novels in the Big Creek Series. She grew up in rural West Virginia. Her use of Appalachian folk lure made me giggle as a small girl. She also did not mince words when talking about the joys and struggles of living in poverty in the hills. She was an overcomer.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

There is always hope.

What challenged you about writing this story?

On an emotional level, writing in detail about the struggles of the young women featured in the book. On a practical level, getting the dialogue correct when using the Appalachian colloquialisms.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

I relate to Coral the most. On the surface, she seems quiet and passive, yet deep down she has tremendous courage. Like Coral, I appear to be meek and mild, yet I have backbone and often do things outside the box.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they have read it?

My hope is that readers will recognize that there is always a plan for redemption and a way of escape from the difficulties of life.

What is something about you that is unique or that we may not know about you?

I live in South Africa and was bitten by a spitting cobra a couple of years ago. I should have died but survived and even thrived amid the trauma.

The Melody of the Mulberries
(Big Creek Series, #2)
By Tonya Jewel Blessing
Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 248 Pages
September 1, 2019 by Capture Books

This sequel to The Whispering of the Willows is set in the late 1920s' Appalachia, where granny witches and spiritualism often show the path for wanderers to take, especially in matters of the heart.

This Big Creek sequel follows the lives and loves of two siblings. Coral determines to visit the family's nemesis, Charlie, now in prison for the rape of her sister, Emerald, and the murder of her inlaw. When Mercy re-enters brother Ernest's life, he has already found a new attraction in his elder brother's widow.

Coral sat in contemplation under a mulberry tree. It was spring, and the fragrant female blossoms promised the mid-summer arrival of first white, then pink, then crimson, and finally deep purple berries. The white berries were hard and tart and enjoyed by the quail, wild turkeys, mocking birds, and blue jays. The blackish purple berries were soft and sweet - perfect for pies and jams.

When the berries turned white, Coral would thank the good Lord for providing food for the birds. When the berries ripened she would thank the good Lord for the sweetness savored in her mouth and curse the birds for wanting more than their share.

Where Emerald Ashby's story leaves us in the last pages of The Whispering of the Willows, sixteen-year-old Coral Ashby's story begins. Like the changing mulberries, Appalachian siblings Coral and Ernest Ashby, navigate life through the late 1920s. Coral is determined to visit the family nemesis, Charlie, who now stews in prison.

When Ernest's previous love interest, Mercy, returns to the holler of Big Creek, she discovers that his heart is now singing a melody for Charlotte, the older Ashby brother's widow. But Mercy has brought along her own spiritual tools and a special friend who guides her way.

Accompanied by friends and foes, matters of the heart complicate life for Coral and Ernest. Relationships must be journeyed carefully.

The Whispering of the Willows
(Big Creek Series, #1)
By Tonya Jewel Blessing
Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 396 Pages
February 2, 2016 by Capture Books

Young Emie isn't desperate for a man, but she is surrounded by a variety of them in the Appalachian holler of Big Creek. How does a young girl find her way, and grow strong, when life begins to spin out of control?

A 1920s' saga of Emerald Ashby coming of age.

Set against the superstitions and old time religion in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, author Tonya Jewel Blessing tells a difficult, yet redemptive story of a blossoming young woman who is accompanied by her friends and her foes on a journey towards hope and healing. Love weaves through gut-wrenching circumstances and dismal poverty where Emerald Ashby grows strong despite grievous wrongs committed against her. In this desperate historical setting, mysterious disappearances lead to traps set for the innocent.

Now, when key individuals begin carving out a rescue plan, Emerald Ashby sets a few of her own traps. It's a page turner. In this ailing town. What will be their measure of success?

Cleverly suspenseful and sweetly spoken, the storyteller's unassuming voice transforms an Appalachian trail of tears into holy terror against an evil that stalks the innocent. In The Whispering of the Willows, an Appalachian marriage practice might be compared to the modern sex trade which exploits young females.

Not since Catherine Marshall's strong heroine named Christy, has an Appalachian drama come to life like The Whispering of the Willows.

Includes: Bibliography and Book Club Questions. A novel for women examining the Old Time Religion. Coming of age in the Southern Appalachians. If you love a story where the underdog surfaces and thrives, you'll love this story.

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Note from the Author

Welcome and thank you for joining my launch and tour. I’m also super excited that I’ve finally finished this book. I began it almost three years ago, but due to other commitments, both professional and personal, and a serious case of writer’s block, not to mention a minor identity crisis, this book was a long time in creation. This is Book 5 in the Rogue Hearts Series, a familial series about the Amesbury family, but it’s written as a stand-alone novel, so you don’t need to have read any of the other books in the series to enjoy this one.

Not a Fine Gentleman is about Lady Margaret, who is accused of murdering her husband and has gone on the run, and Connor Jackson, the Bow Street Runner assigned to bring her back to face justice. But as Connor’s feelings for the courageous women grows, as do the list of suspects, he can no longer clearly see the lines between truth and lawlessness.

This romantic story of loss and betrayal, forgiveness and redemption, will leave you laughing, crying, and swooning. Sprinkled liberally with suspense, mystery, and heart-melting kisses, this is not your ordinary historical tale. Fans of Victorian and Regency Eras as well as those seeking clean and wholesome romance with plenty of chemistry will love this story!

—Donna

Author Interview

What inspired you to write WHERE THE ROAD BENDS?

One thing definitely inspired the location of the story: I wanted to write a novel that was based in my country. My first two novels – The Baggage Handler (that’s the one that won the Christy Award in 2019) and The Camera Never Lies – were set in an Any City and I’ve had feedback from readers around the world thanking me for writing a story that felt like it happened in their home town.

But this next one isn’t set there. Where the Road Bends is firmly placed in my home.  Outback Australia.

I’m an Aussie writer and I wanted to transport readers to my home – places I’ve visited; places I’m proud of. While the protagonists are American characters getting together fifteen years after graduation, the landscape is a character in itself.  It’s rough and rugged but it’s beautiful and delicate. There is a big expanse of nothing, but it’s so full of life.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

Where the Road Bends is a story to reflect on and enjoy – reflect on the theme of where you are on the road of life, and enjoy the delicate beauty and rugged danger of outback Australia.

What challenged you about writing this story?

My biggest challenge was to do justice to the landscape of Australia. I wrote passages to help paint a picture of what it’s like, but most of the time I felt like I was battling the feeling of being an art student gripping a brush for the first time while taking on a Picasso painting. So I spent time over those passages, like this:

A cramp seized Andy’s shoulders as he pulled them in tight, hemmed in by a domestic flight cursed with the lack of the luxurious space of international business class. He had withdrawn into the view.

For two hours the ground had changed thirty thousand feet below as the crisscross suburban gray of the city gave way to deep green, which gave way to dusty brown, which gave way to an ochre orange. Now the earth was rich red. It was as if the lifeblood of the country was being cleansed as it flowed back to its heart.

This is what it’s like to fly into central Australia. We all pretty much live on the coast, so when you fly out of our capital cities and toward the outback, for thirty minutes there are signs of life and then there’s … nothing. But the thing you notice most is the change of color, and you know you’re over the outback when everything below you is red.

Or this particular passage:

The clouds slowly unveiled flecks of silver paint from an artist’s wide brush swept across the heavens. A chill moved in as the darkness chased the daylight from the landscape that surrendered by hues—orange to pink, pink to gray, and gray sliding to black. The dried gum tree crackled as the dancing campfire flames consumed it. Shadows shimmered between the swags and the spinifex, and Lincoln was washed in a warm orange glow.

A silence draped over the crater as Eddie released another shower of sparks into the night air. “You will discover your- self being out here for a while.” He swept an arm upward. “Sleeping under the stars. Disconnected from being bothered every five minutes by messages that don’t really matter from people you aren’t really with. Away from the barrage of overselling of stuff you don’t need. Taking a moment to appreciate our world and your place it.”

When you’re in the outback, you’re in the middle of nowhere. You are, at times, hundreds of miles from the next person. And at night, the stars unroll until the heavens are filled. I’ve never seen anything like it. You feel so insignificant, yet so in wonder of the power of creation.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

All four of my American characters are in their late 30s and wondering why they have arrived at this point in each of their lives. Lincoln has not quite recovered from having his heart broken in College. Eliza is highly successful but something leaves her feeling empty. Bree’s dream never materialized and now she’s living a life she never thought she’d live. And Andy just wants to run away and start again.

I think I relate a little to each of them. Based on the conversations I have with those people around me, I think we can all relate a little to each of them.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I write all of my novels so that once the back cover is closed and the final page is turned, that is the start of something: a conversation, a thought process, a prayer. It’s my hope that a reader will finish Where the Road Bends and think about where they are on the road of life, and where they’re going from here.

I would also love them to fall in love with outback Australia like we all have down here. It truly is a wonder of creation.

What is something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods or hobby?

Well, I’m an Australian male writing in Christian fiction in the USA, and the first Aussie-based author to win a Christy Award. That’s pretty good in terms of point of difference right there.

As a writer, I’ve now written and published three novels in just under 18 months. I have developed a process of think-dictate-write-edit that enables me to keep the stories flowing. What this process involves is thinking, talking and writing on a loop to help keep pushing my story forward, and getting around the idea of waiting for the inspiration to arrive.

Oh, and as an Aussie my favorite foods are seafood, lamb and meat pies. In that order.

Where the Road Bends
By David Rawlings
Christian Fiction
Hardcover, Audiobook & ebook, 304 Pages
June 2, 2020 by Thomas Nelson

Fifteen years after college graduation, four friends reconnect to keep a long-ago promise and go on a trip of a lifetime in the Australian Outback.

Eliza needs to disconnect from her high-powered fashion job to consider the CEO position she’s just been offered. Lincoln hopes to rekindle a past relationship and escape from another one. Bree looks forward to a fun getaway from home and her deeply buried disappointments. Andy wants to disappear from the mess he’s made of his life—possibly forever.

Dropped at a campsite in the middle of nowhere, the friends quickly discover they aren’t the same people they once were, and they begin to confront hard truths about one another—and themselves. Then a bizarre storm sweeps across their camp, scattering them across the desert. Wondering if they are part of some strange escape game, each of the friends meets a guide to help them find exactly what they need: purpose, healing, courage, and redemption.

But they’ve already traveled far down the road of life and course-correcting to become the people they were meant to be won’t be easy.
